You may be surprised to learn how often the Pope and Vatican have addressed the topic in recent years. In November 2020, Pope Francis invited Catholics around the world, as part of his monthly prayer intention, to pray that robotics and artificial intelligence remain always at the service of human beings — rather than the other way around. Even before that, in the spring of 2020, the Pontifical Academy for Life signed a declaration calling for the ethical and responsible use of AI. Technology giants Microsoft and IBM also signed that declaration.
The declaration endorsed by the Vatican includes six ethical principles that should guide the development of artificial intelligence. They are: Transparency; Inclusion; Accountability (responsibility); Impartiality (not create biases); Reliability; and Security & Privacy (respect the privacy of users).
Pope Francis has said that all forms of artificial intelligence should be used to alleviate human suffering, promote integral development, and help end wars and conflicts, not increase inequality and injustice in the world. Artificial intelligence ought to serve our best human potential and our highest aspirations, not compete with them. In the spirit of using AI to serve my best human potential, below is my end-of-year family Christmas message; my Christmas poem created with the help of AI. Applying keywords: “Deacon Dan, wife Beth, flamingos, and Christmas.”
Deacon Dan’s Christmas Poem In a town with cheer, Deacon Dan sincere, Beth by his side, spreading joy far and near. Christmas bells chimed, a festive command, Flamingos adorned the snow-covered land. Snowflakes fell, a celestial ballet, The procession began, candles lit the way. Deacon Dan and Beth, a duo so grand, Guiding the hearts in this Christmastide land. Deacon Dan's sermon echoed God’s saving grace, Beth's smile rejoiced in seeing each face. Christmas magic, the Nativity, and the birth of a King, A celebration of love that this season brings. Flamingos danced in the night, cheerfully and free, Amidst the Christmas carols and the yuletide glee Their pink feathers twirled in the crisp winter air. Giving praise to our Savior in their own festive flair.
This story was told with humor and grace, Deacon Dan and Beth will now take their place. Offering Christmas blessings of joy and delight, May God’s gift of Jesus, continue to shine bright. Merry Christmas from my family to yours. Deacon Dan and Beth
